Officer Mary Davis and her canine partner Sonic from the Montgomery County Police Department visited Professor Laure Brooks' CCJS340 Policing class this week.
Officer Davis has been a police officer for 28 years and has done canine work since 1991. She encourages students to find a career they are passionate about – her work as a police officer has been “a great ride.”
The field of canine police work is difficult to get into and requires extensive training. Sonic is a German Shepherd, a top choice for police dogs for its utilitarian qualities and intelligence capacity in the areas of tracking, protection and obedience.
Officer Davis considers her team work with Sonic to be amazing and is sometimes baffled by their strong connection on many different levels, but she is certain it is a gift and it works for the betterment of society.
