As a first-semester freshman, a student may be granted admission into the Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJS) major upon admission to the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD).  Entering freshmen can list CCJS as their intended major on their application.

First semester freshmen have until the last day of classes in their first semester to change and/or add the CCJS major through the major change process, which begins by meeting with the CCJS departmental advisors.

All students accepted directly as freshmen into the CCJS major will be subject to an academic review at 45 attempted Maryland credits (this excludes AP or IB credits and any Freshmen Connection credits) in order to remain in the major. The academic review criterion includes the following gateway requirements:

  • Completion of MATH 107 or STAT 100 with a grade of C- or higher. A calculus class, MATH 120, 136, or 140, with a grade of C- or higher may be substituted
  • Completion of CCJS 100 with a grade of C- or higher
  • Completion of CCJS 105 with a grade of C- or higher
  • A minimum grade point average of 2.0 in all coursework completed at UMD

Any student who does not complete the gateway requirements and/or violates an LEP policy will be dismissed from the major.   Additionally, any student who drops below a 2.0 cumulative GPA at UMD will be dismissed from the major.  Once a student has been dismissed from CCJS the major, he/she cannot return or reapply to the CCJS major.  All LEP policies can be found on the UMD LEP website.
