Bo Jiang (CCJS doctoral student) will present his recent publication, "Social Control, Trade Openness and Human Trafficking" which he co-authored with Dr. Gary LaFree (CCJS professor) on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at noon in the CCJS large conference room at 2165E LeFrak Hall.  Their research paper was published in the Journal of Quantitative Criminology, one of the most respected journals in the field.

The presentation is on the issue of human trafficking and macro-level social disorganization perspective. Using a human trafficking dataset from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for 64 countries from 2003 to 2008, the study shows that an ‘Inverted U’ relationship exists between human trafficking and openness of the country's economy. Although human trafficking worsens initially when countries open their closed economies, it is possible for these countries to branch out and away from human trafficking through sustained economic development.

The presentation will be 30 minutes followed by 30 minutes of questions, answers and discussion on the topic of human trafficking.   Anyone interested in this topic is invited to attend.
