The Development of the Global Terrorism Database

The Development of the Global Terrorism Database

Despite growing concerns of terrorist violence, no comprehensive database on global terrorist attacks existed at the beginning of the 21st century.  In particular, previous data collections excluded domestic terrorist attacks.  In 2002, we began to compile data on both domestic and international terrorist attacks from 1970 through to the present.  We combine information from a wide variety of open media sources to create what is now the most comprehensive terrorism event database in existence.  The research team has produced dozens of publications studying the patterns of terrorism, its predictors, and the influence of interventions on terrorist outcomes.
