We are pleased to announce that Dr. Rod K. Brunson and Dr. Jean McGloin have been elected the 2027 President and Vice President of the American Society of Criminology (ASC), respectively.  ASC is an international organization whose members advance scholarly, scientific, and professional knowledge related to the measurement, causes, effects, prevention, control, and treatment of crime and delinquency. This recognition reflects their long-standing commitment to advancing the discipline.

Dr. Brunson is Chair and Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland. He has been an active ASC member since 1997 and has served the Society in numerous roles, including Executive Counselor, committee chair, and editorial board member. His research focuses on police-community relations, gun violence, and public safety strategies that maintain community trust. In his statement, Dr. Brunson emphasized his commitment to fostering a climate within ASC that “values diplomacy, innovative thinking, constructive criticism, transparency, and mutual respect.” He highlighted the importance of investing in ASC’s core values to strengthen the organization’s relevance in policy- and community-focused circles. A hallmark of his career, he noted, is “valuing all voices,” a practice he will continue as President. Dr. Brunson also stressed the importance of supporting early career scholars, developing purposive mentoring initiatives, and advocating for ASC to expand its role in providing desperately needed research support.

Dr. McGloin is also a Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland, as well as the Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. She has been an active ASC member since 2000 and is a former Executive Counselor who has served on numerous ASC committees and editorial boards. She was the first female Editor of the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency and currently a member of the Scientific Integrity and Constitution and By-Laws Committees. Her research centers on peer influence, co-offending, and street gangs. Dr. McGloin stated that ASC should be intentional about embracing the heterogeneity in its membership and “make sure it is reflected in our leadership, policies, publications and annual meetings. People should feel seen and heard, and the meetings should be accessible to and reflective of the diversity of our membership.”  Regarding her role as Vice President, Dr. McGloin said, “I do not see the title as an honorific but instead as a call to service.”

We congratulate Drs. Brunson and McGloin on their election and look forward to their strong leadership!
