CCJS is pleased to report that the US National Academies of Sciences has invited former Department Chair and Distinguished University, Professor Lawrence W. Sherman, to chair an 18 month project on global security benefits of training and consultation to enhance police fairness and effectiveness.
The committee was formed at the request of the US Department of State. The Committee on Law and Justice will convene an ad hoc committee to review and assess existing evidence on policing institutions, police practices and capacities, and police legitimacy in the international context. As appropriate, the committee will make evidence-driven policy and research recommendations for key stakeholders with the ultimate goal of informing the U.S. Department of State's capacity-building activities aimed at strengthening the effectiveness of local, in-country law enforcement agencies, building the technical skills of foreign law enforcement personnel through training and technical assistance, and assisting in institutional police reform at the local level.
