We are excited to announce that Dr. Britte Van Tiem has joined the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Van Tiem's research focuses on the short- and long-term effects of what happens within prison walls. Her work examines important topics such as prison climate, peer dynamics in prison, and the impact of prison-based programming on post-release employment outcomes. In addition, Dr. Van Tiem is interested in the overlap between systems of crime and immigration control, having published work on the impact of local-federal immigration enforcement partnerships on police behavior.

Dr. Van Tiem earned their doctoral degree in Criminology from the University of Pennsylvania and held a prestigious SSRC Criminal Justice Innovation Postdoctoral Fellowship. Dr. Van Tiem also is a proud alumna of University College Utrecht and Cambridge University.

Born and raised in the Netherlands, Dr. Van Tiem has lived in Turkey, Uganda, and the UK before moving to the US. She brings a global perspective to their work, having previously managed a large-scale peer support program in prisons in the UK and Ireland and serving as an independent monitor of two immigration removal centers.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Van Tiem to the department and look forward to the contributions she will make to our academic community.
