Current University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) students, beyond their first semester, who would like to declare Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJS) as their major are required to meet the following gateway criteria before applying to the major:

  • Completion of CCJS 100 with a grade of C- or higher
  • Completion of CCJS 105 with a grade of C- or higher
  • Completion of MATH 107 or STAT 100 with a grade of C- or higher.  A calculus class, MATH 120, 136, or 140, with a grade of C- or higher may be substituted
  • A minimum grade point average of 2.5 in all college level coursework is required

 

Declaring The CCJS Major:

Students must complete the following steps:

Note: If you are currently in a gateway requirement (CCJS100, CCJS105 and/or MATH) please contact CCJS Advising (ccjsadvising [at] umd.edu) before proceeding.

1. Review the CCJS Limited Enrollment Program requirements listed above. 

2. Initiate a major change or addition of major request through TerpEngage.

3. Once a student initiates the request in TerpEngage, they will receive an email with detailed instructions outlining specific tasks for completing the request.

  • These tasks will include: 1. Completing a CCJS Declaration of Major workshop, which is held either in-person or via Zoom.  2. Attending a BSOS Graduation Planning Workshop online.  3.  Developing a graduation plan. 4. Submitting the application and graduation plan to CCJS Advising.
  • Throughout the process you may be notified if additional actions are required.

4. After you complete all of the tasks listed in the system and your graduation plan has been approved by the BSOS Feller Center, your CCJS major declaration will be finalized.  These requests may take up to 15 business days to process.

Notes:

  • Students on academic probation/dismissal, student athletes, and other designated student populations will be required to schedule an appointment with a BSOS Feller Center Advisor to finalize their major declaration.  Instructions will be provided in the tasks list.
  • Neither the BSOS Feller Center nor the CCJS department can lit registration blocks imposed by a student's current major
  • Permission will not be granted for courses restricted to CCJS majors prior to your major declaration forms being submitted to CCJS Advising unless it is on/after the first day of the semester.
