Distinguished University Professor Lawrence Sherman joins the UK Metropolitan Police as its first Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) and advisor to the Board. Professor Sherman will provide expert independent advice on science, technology, and research methods, to inform decision-making across the Met under the leadership of the new Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley. The Chief Scientific Officer will start on October 1, 2022.

Former Department Chair and Distinguished University UMD Professor Lawrence W. Sherman held a joint appointment with the University of Cambridge Institute of Criminology, where he is Director of the Jerry Lee Centre of Experimental Criminology and Wolfson Professor of Criminology Emeritus. His research has advanced the application of criminology to public policy in partnerships with over 30 countries, including the UK, Australia, Denmark, Sweden, Hong Kong, and Trinidad & Tobago.
